BPE bolsters employment team
BPE has strengthened its employment team with the recent appointments of John Murphy and Rachel Stephens.
Associate Solicitor, John has joined BPE following a spell as an in-house lawyer at a national cleaning and facilities management company. The experience he gained in that role will be used to benefit employers in their dealings with employees and provide pragmatic advice on various issues including dismissals, redundancies, outsourcing and business transfers. When he is not at work John puts his practical ability to the test by dabbling in a spot of DIY.
In returning to private practice John has been presented with valuable opportunites, as he explains: “When I worked in-house I missed the cut and thrust of working for a huge diversity of clients with different problems. I have already helped to resolve a number of issues for clients, combining my legal expertise and commercial awareness.”
Rachel, who qualified early this year after successfully completing her training contract at a Bristol-based legal expenses insurance company, will be working with a broad range of businesses to develop workable policies and procedures and effective solutions to employee issues. Outside work Rachel, who has moved to Cheltenham from Cardiff, has an ear for music, playing both the piano and cello.
Commenting on her decision to join BPE Rachel said: “I was particularly attracted to BPE because of its strong reputation in the commercial marketplace and the fact that I would be able to get involved in both contentious and non-contentious work. I am delighted to be part of such an experienced and supportive team and look forward to the challenges ahead.”
Head of employment at BPE Partner Darren Sherborne said: “The appointment of two high-calibre lawyers such as John and Rachel adds both strength and depth to our team. Their proactive approach has been apparent from the start and both are already making a real effort to get to know our clients.”
BPE’s employment team was recently placed in the top band of recommended firms for the M4 Corridor and Gloucestershire region by independent legal directory The Legal 500. Darren Sherborne and Andrea Bateman have also been named leaders in their field by Chambers and Partners.
The Legal 500 said: “BPE is new to the top tier this year, thanks in part to the strength of client praise for its work. Partner Darren Sherborne, has 'extensive knowledge and confidence' and associate Andrea Bateman is 'thorough, clear and precise'. The firm has a strong record in defending cases at tribunal.”
