National Star College – an overview
The National Star College is an independent Gloucestershire college that works with learners who have physical disabilities and associated learning difficulties.

Teaching staff have ambitious plans to expand the college's existing site to improve opportunities for learning, social development, preparation for employment and progress towards independent living. Our fundraising efforts will help them put their plans into action.

Students come to the college from all over the country to gain the skills that will enable them to make the most of every opportunity that adult life has to offer.

More than 160 full-time students, aged between 16 and 25, attend the college. In addition 200 part-time adult learners from throughout Gloucestershire study at the college, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2007.

"We are extremely grateful to all the partners and employees at BPE Solicitors for appointing the National Star College as their chosen charity for the next three years and are delighted at their extraordinarily generous pledge of £40,000. With great thanks."

Peter Cottingham, Chairman of the Star Appeal Board

BPE trainees to Star in charity trek

A group of trainee solicitors from BPE are to travel nearly 100km across Morocco to raise money for The National Star College.

BPE Solicitors were challenged to raise £40,000 over three years for the college, and trainee lawyers came up trumps when discussing fund raising ideas.

Five trainees, Rathini Tharmakulasingam, David Dew, David Holmes, Mia Dawson and Will Charlesworth, are to traverse Africa’s highest mountain range, the Atlas Mountains, and battle adverse weather conditions in an arduous journey that spans 84km, with much of the route 2000m above sea level.

In undertaking this demanding and strenuous trek, the trainees can expect to encounter not only the spectacular, rocky terrain, but temperatures that can easily surpass 30 degrees in the day and -10 degrees at night.

As well as the trek itself, which will last for eight days, several fund-raising events have been mooted. These include a sumptuous traditional Moroccan feast with haggling over donated gifts, an established Moroccan practice. Further proceedings include a ‘Desert Rally’ go-karting challenge and an auction of Moroccan artefacts.

BPE Partner Julian Pyrke commented: ‘I’m delighted at the innovative and challenging idea that the trainees have come up with. BPE is committed to raising a large sum of money for National Star College over the next three years and the management board believe this is an excellent way to start us off’.
