Supporting the Community
School governors, scout leaders, charitable trustees, Territorial Army volunteers and unpaid fundraisers all work for BPE.

The organisations they work with may be different but our staff all share one thing in common – a desire to put something back into the community in which they live and work.

Jon Close, one of the firm's construction specialists, has volunteered as a community governor at Marling School in Stroud for the past two years.

A former old boy, Jon finds his legal expertise and construction and engineering knowledge extremely useful in building bridges between the school and the local business community as well as helping him to add value in governor meetings.

"I am usually the first port of call for any of the school's general legal queries and if I cannot help myself I can usually find someone who can," said Jon.

"When I returned to Stroud from London, being a governor reintroduced me to the local community and has proved to be a great way to get involved in the area where I live."

Despite being a successful corporate lawyer and a busy mum-of-four Partner Helen Lovatt still manages to devote part of her busy week to volunteering. An essential member of BPE's National Star College fundraising committee, Helen is an Appeal Board member. She is also a governor at Gloucestershire College as well as finding time to chair the PTA at her childrens' school.

"From a networking perspective volunteering has introduced me to so many interesting people," said Helen.

"It is very satisfying when I can put voluntary organisations and local charities in touch with business people that can help them in terms of fundraising and practical support."
