Corporate partner shortlisted
BPE’s senior partner and corporate heavyweight John Workman has been named as a contender for the title of South West Corporate Lawyer of the Year for the second year running.

John, who has a first class reputation for innovative deal making, has made it to the final of the South West Deals Awards 2007.

A number of BPE’s major plc clients and other senior business advisers in the region backed John’s nomination.

Longstanding client Bob Holt, Chief Executive and CEO of the Mears Group plc said: “When looking for a legal advisor I want an individual who will guide and support the process and who can provide first class advice.

“John has given me the belief to go and deliver my strategy, always ensuring that not only is a transaction concluded securely but that my fellow shareholders are fully briefed and protected. Without John I would not have had the confidence to go out there and achieve what I have.”

With a highly commercial approach and a corporate legal knowledge that is second-to-none, John’s focus is on developing and maintaining relationships with plc clients on the acquisition trail. His particular specialisations are multiple acquisitions and disposals and working with management teams seeking venture capital.

The past year has seen John at the heart of several complex multi-party deals, where he combined drive, perseverance, fast thinking, imagination and technical ability to steer his clients’ businesses to success.

Recent transactions handled by John include the £18 million acquisition by Maxima Holdings plc of 3net, a niche computer services player with key partner relationships (acquisition and deal funding by placing). This was the ninth acquisition by Maxima since November 2004.

He also led the BPE team that advised on the Mears Group plc public takeover of Careforce plc; a deal which has allowed Mears to expand its public sector services into the community domiciliary care provision market.

Legal directory Chambers UK describes John as “the guy that does the clever stuff”, “quite evidently very experienced” and an “extremely supportive, easy lawyer to deal with.”

All short-listed lawyers represent the cream of the region’s deal-making community. Winners will be announced at a black tie awards dinner on September 20 at the Dolman Suite, Ashton Gate, Bristol.

Supported by the Western Daily Press, the coveted South West Deals Awards are the only ones in the region to champion dealmakers in the corporate finance community – from lawyers to accountants, bankers and venture capitalists.
