Estonian exchange
A high-flying Estonian lawyer has joined the team at BPE Solicitors this autumn to learn more about English law and to forge stronger links with her UK counterparts.
Twenty-eight-year-old Agnes Jõe is normally a member of the twelve strong in-house legal team at the Estonian Ministry of Defence.
But until the middle of December she will be working alongside solicitors at BPE to learn more about the workings of English law.
The exchange of legal know-how has been organised by John Beevor, the UK’s Estonian consul, who happens to work at the St James’ Square firm.
“I met Agnes when we worked together on two major procurements for the Estonian navy earlier in the year and I was impressed by her legal skills and enthusiasm to learn more about English contract law,” said John.
“I suggested that she should consider spending some time working at a British law firm and I was delighted when her bosses agreed that an exchange with BPE would be an excellent way for her to improve her English legal knowledge,” he added.
BPE’s Senior Partner John Workman was happy to give his support to the exchange. He said: “We invest heavily in training for our own staff so that they keep up-to-date with legal changes likely to affect our clients. Through John Beevor, BPE has strong links with Estonia and it is pleasure to play host to a young lawyer who has already proved she has so much potential to grow and develop from the experience.”
Agnes, who normally lives in Tallinn, will work alongside solicitors in each of the firm’s key teams during her three-month stay.
“I am starting to get the basics of English contract law which is good and I am also becoming better at listening so that I understand much more,” said Agnes, who has been sharing a house with some of BPE’s trainee solicitors during her time in Cheltenham.
“Working in an open plan office is quite a different experience for me but that has been useful in that I am learning all the time from observing and listening to how the solicitors deal with their clients. The way people work here is very impressive, everybody gives 100 per cent,” she added.
Her first impressions of Cheltenham are equally positive, and Agnes has enjoyed attending events at this year’s literary festival in the town.
“I will return home with more fluent English and a good grasp of English law which will help me in my role going forward. I am grateful to the staff at BPE for welcoming me into their team and I am sure I will leave with many new friends,” said Agnes.
