Leading lawyer accolade from Chambers UK
One of the best lawyers in the UK for consumer credit and asset finance advice works at regional law firm BPE, according to independent directory, Chambers UK.
Joanne Davis, who took the title of specialist litigator of the year in recent credit industry awards, has been recognised as one of the best lawyers in the UK specialising in asset finance and consumer finance work.
The fact that Joanne had developed the firm’s credit and asset finance offering into a national practice within less than four years helped to secure her ‘best of the UK’ reputation. Clients told researchers that they valued ‘her clear and reasoned advice that laypeople can understand; she simplifies the processes of litigation for her clients, while also balancing the costs involved against the likely results.’
The firm’s personal injury specialists were also ranked within the top tier in the South West with ‘utterly charming’ partner Mark Ovington being described as ‘a seasoned lawyer with a great track record.’ As one client told researchers: ‘he has seen it all before, so nothing takes him by surprise.’
Fellow partners John Workman (corporate finance), Richard Handley (real estate), Darren Sherborne (employment), Paul Wakefield (corporate finance) and Andrew Taylor (restructuring/insolvency) were all named by the directory as leading lawyers in their field.
‘Commercial’, ‘incredibly efficient’ and ‘down-to-earth’ were how clients chose to describe BPE when directory researchers asked for feedback on the 25-partner firm.
BPE’s corporate lawyers in Cheltenham and Birmingham were singled out for particular praise.
Researchers said that under ‘highly competent and client-focused’ Senior Partner John Workman, the friendly and confident team had a reputation for being ‘locally knowledgeable and competitive.’
The contribution of experienced partner Paul Wakefield, described by clients as an ‘unusually pragmatic commercial lawyer’, with the ability to ‘take the long view’ was seen to strengthen the firm’s corporate offering.
Regarded as ‘a leading firm in Cheltenham,’ clients said BPE’s commercial property (real estate) team was both decent and competent. Partner Richard Handley was described as a ‘highly respected veteran and accomplished commercial operator.’
Head of employment Darren Sherborne was praised by clients for being ‘hard-working, down-to-earth and ambitious.’ His colleague Andrea Bateman gained praise for offering ‘good practical advice’ and having an ‘appreciation of the values of a business.’
Partner Andrew Taylor’s compact yet able restructuring/insolvency team was recognised for its growing reputation, with sources describing it as ‘an insolvency team to watch in the West Midlands.’ The team was seen to be ‘winning new instructions through hard work and determination.’
The creative approach of the team’s dispute resolution team, led by partner Philip Radford was praised by clients with the team being described as ‘excellent, flexible and readily available’ – all essential qualities when handling business disputes.
Senior Partner John Workman said: “When you operate at our level clients take our technical excellence for granted. They choose to work with the BPE team because they like us as people and can relate to our commercial approach and entrepreneurial spirit.”
