Solicitors seeks ‘oarsome’ teams to take up coracle challenge

Cotswolds-based BPE Solicitors is supporting a relay race with a difference on 13 July, when they invite teams to take part in the Gloucestershire Coracle Challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

It’s hoped that this event, the latest initiative in BPE’s two-year goal to raise £54,000, will take them very close to hitting their ambitious target which is the equivalent of funding a Macmillan nurse for a year. Coracles are circular one-person boats controlled with a single oar and the challenge will involve teams of four taking turns to relay their coracle from one bank to the other.

Following a successful 297-mile sponsored walk, a week-long static bike challenge and a charity golf day, the Gloucestershire Coracle Challenge, being held at Gloucester Rowing Club, presents another unusual opportunity for local firms to enter a team to take part and join in the fun.

Senior Partner, John Workman, said: “This is the first time Macmillan has brought the event to our county, so we’re backing them to make a big splash with the Gloucestershire Coracle Challenge.”

Fancy dress is encouraged for those taking part. There will be a number of prizes available on the day for the winners and runners up of the challenge, including best-dressed, biggest fundraising total and of course the highly coveted wooden spoon.

Competitors will be provided with a coracle and paddle along with plenty of time to practice the somewhat difficult art of steering a round boat with one paddle. Full details and entry forms can be found at http://www.gloucestershirecoraclechallenge.co.uk/ and anyone wishing to donate to the cause without entering a team can do so at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/bpecoraclechallenge

“Macmillan nurses provide a specialist service to those in need and everyone at the firm and those involved in the events so far have been fantastic in their support and efforts,” said John.

BPE is launching its own mini-coracle challenge by inviting everyone to make their own paper boat and send photos of them floating – at the park, on a river, or even in the bath. Photos sent to macmillanchallenge@bpe.co.uk will be posted onto BPE’s social media with a prize of a family ticket (for four people) to WWT Slimbridge for the photo taken in the most interesting location.

There will also be a barbeque and cash bar for spectators and teams to enjoy the atmosphere, with all proceeds going to the charity.
