Following on from my previous article, ‘Working for free can be costly’, it occurred to me that contractors and consultants routinely incur significant dents in their overheads when scoping new work and preparing tenders and when they cannot, commercially, recoup all their head office costs via the jobs they do win, then they too are, to a greater or lesser extent ‘working for free’. It is therefore worth reviewing the circumstances in which such costs could be recovered.
