As the founder of BPE Innovation (in July 2010), I was encouraged by the Royal Society to establish the UK’s first and, still, only dedicated legal service to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (‘STEM’). Working at the interface between the private sector and Government in the UK’s innovation community, I have been involved in the establishment of most of the major publicly funded companies created in the last decade to fill the innovation ‘gap’ in the sectors which they serve, including the entire programme of Catapult innovation centres.

My early career experience as company secretary with two major, technology driven, PLCs is frequently called upon by high growth businesses keen to ensure they have appropriate but agile governance structures in place. I lead the legal work carried out on behalf of several life sciences based research organisations, both for and not for profit.

In addition to being the legal adviser to leading STEM institutions like Leiden University and the National Physical Laboratory, I am an experienced NED, sitting on the board of several major companies working in STEM, including the Open Data Institute, the Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult, and Aberystwyth University’s Innovation & Enterprise Company.
