Our Energy team work closely with a number of green energy technology specialists and funders.

From advising on contract terms, negotiating with lawyers and de-risking projects, to putting together the financial drivers and bringing deals to market, we stand out as the law firm that makes deals happen.

What Makes Us Different?

We know the key players in the industry, we know what funders are looking for and we know the finance models and structures that sit behind renewable energy projects.

This knowledge and the ability to support you right the way through a project, from asset creation to installing technology to generating and selling power, is invaluable.

Not many legal firms can say they have a dedicated energy team or can show the experience we have across this industry. We've built a reputation for saying it as it is and helping to de-risk potentially difficult projects.

We specialise in the following areas:

  • Renewable
  • Energy from waste
  • Tidal

BPE Energy Acts for Largest Rooftop Installation in the UK

Our Energy team advised EMDC Solar Ltd, a subsidiary of SBC Renewables, on the largest single span roof PV site in the UK. The system, designed by SBC, sees an array of 24,272 solar panels installed on the rooftop of the new Marks & Spencer East Midlands distribution centre in Castle Donnington.

MS Play

EMDC lease the roof space and sells the energy back to M&S, with any excess being sold to the grid. Our Energy team advised EMDC on the property, construction, PPA, onward funding and disposal to Amber Infrastructure.

Completed early in 2015, the installation generates around 6.1MW of electricity annually. The energy generated is enough to make the fully automated distribution centre, which is big enough to hold 11 football pitches, close to self-sufficient during daylight hours and will lower M&S's carbon footprint by 48,000 tonnes over the next twenty years.

BPE Energy advises Guinness Asset Management & Perpetum on 108MW rooftop installation in Kent

Our Energy team advised Guinness Asset Management and Perpetum Energy Europe on the lease, PPA and EPC contract for a 1.8MWp rooftop solar array in Kent.

Shoreham based steel manufacturer, ParkerSteel, partnered with renewable power systems company, Perpetum Energy, to fit the solar array to the roof of its manufacturing facility.

The solar installation will be owned by Larimin, a company supported by Guinness Asset Managements Enterprise Investment Scheme. The array's operation is expected to negate the emission of around 70 tonnes of CO2 each year. ParkerSteel will purchase the electricity from Larimin under a PPA.

We advised Guiness Asset Management and Perpetum on the commercial property lease of the roof space and the EPC agreement between Perpetum and Larimin.

"We were invited to work with Guinness Asset Management on this project following our involvement with the rooftop installation on the Marks & Spencer distribution centre in Castle Donnington", explained Tim Williams, a Partner in BPE's Energy team. "The project wasn't completely straight forward because ParkerSteel lease their building from the Port Authority."

We have delivered more than 190MW of solar PV into the grid in the past 18 months and has been retained to work on further rooftop installations for both Perpetum and Guiness Asset Management.
