Harry Jones: My BPE story

I joined BPE in September 2019 having completed my law degree at the University of Bristol. I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in law and become a Solicitor, however I wanted a break from studying and to get out into the working world and enhance my legal work experience.

My first job role at BPE was as a Paralegal in the Commercial Property team, BPE’s largest team. In this team I immediately had the great opportunity to become involved in a large project for one of the firm’s biggest clients where I was able to branch out into a variety of property work, gaining a rounded experience of the practice area. I stayed in the team for  just over a year until an opportunity arose for me to join the Construction and Engineering team in November 2020. I jumped at the chance to join this department because, given its small size, I was able get heavily involved in all of the matters being undertaken by the team. This is an opportunity that I may not have had in a larger team and that has undoubtedly enhanced my learning and development as a future Solicitor.

In September 2020 started my Legal Practice Course on a part-time basis alongside my full-time work. This suited me well because I did not want to take a break from working to complete the course, but I wanted to start my LPC in order to continue on the journey to qualify as a solicitor. Studying part-time alongside being employed full-time  is and has been a challenge, however BPE are extremely supportive, giving me the time I need to dedicate to my studies and prepare for exams. BPE have always been supportive and encouraging in the development of my skills and knowledge as a prospective solicitor, and I have been enrolled on  various courses to strengthen my professional development throughout my time here.

In early 2021 I was thrilled to be offered a Training Contract with BPE which I’ve now started. My first six months as a Trainee will be  in the Construction and Engineering team, using the experience and knowledge I’ve gained to make a smooth transition from working as a Paralegal to taking on more responsibility as a Trainee and undertaking client-facing work.

I was delighted to be offered a Training Contract at BPE because it is the place that I have come to love working in. One of the biggest attractions of BPE is the culture, which I have been able to experience first-hand and become so passionate about myself. BPE has an open plan office which breaks down barriers, and I feel comfortable asking questions to anyone, regardless of their seniority. Working at BPE provides not only a happy and productive working environment but a chance to work with high profile clients on interesting and dynamic matters. Nonetheless, the inclusive and warm culture is no substitute for the quality of work and I have found myself being put under increasing pressures and challenges during my time at BPE, and I would have it no other way.

I am excited to start my training contract and I cannot wait to see what this next chapter in my career has in store.
